He is a former Managing Director at the RBL Group the consultancy founded by Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood. He was also the Global Practice leader at Hewitt Associates where he led at different points in his career the HR, Organization Effectiveness and Change, Leadership, Talent, and Engagement practices.
He has special expertise in improving organizational effectiveness, human resource strategy and metrics, talent and leadership, business ethics, managing large‑scale change, M&A, and increasing growth through innovation. He also has deep experience in developing and coaching leaders and high potentials.
He helps clients build more effective leadership drawing on his own leadership experiences, years of consulting to the world’s most admired companies, and the Top Companies for Leaders Study which he began in 2001 (in conjunction with Fortune and AonHewitt). Bob led the Top Companies Study for 10 years and has written several books and numerous articles providing insights and lessons drawn from the best companies.
He has written over 60 articles and six books on a variety of subjects. His book, Workforce Wake-Up Call: Your Workforce is Changing, Are You?, details the challenges and the solutions needed for the global workforce. Leadership and Governance from the Inside Out, which he co-edited with Jeff Sonnenfeld, Lester Crown Professor in the Practice of Management for the Yale School of Management, is a collection of perspectives on the challenges, problems, and potential solutions associated with corporate governance and leadership in today’s business world. Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE, said it was “a thoughtful framework for rebuilding trust in business,” and Doug Conant, former CEO of Campbell Soup, called it “superbly crafted, thought-provoking, and compelling.” He is also the co-editor of the book Human Resources in the 21st Century, featuring chapters by the world’s thought leaders in leadership and human resources. Bob is co-author of the book Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders. David Cote, CEO of Honeywell, said the book offers “actionable insights” and the authors “focus on the things that matter,” and Susan Peters, Senior Vice President of HR at GE, called it a “must read for all leaders.” His book Bad Business was called a “masterful job” by Tom Peters and “high drama and a fascinating story” by Rosabeth Moss Kanter. Several of Bob’s books have been translated into multiple languages. Bob’s work has been featured in major media sources including CNN, CBS News, The New York Times, Fortune, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, The Economic Times, The Economist, and the Chicago Tribune among others.
He has been a speaker for a number of groups including Harvard Business School, the University of Michigan, Human Resources Planning Society, The Wharton School, Tom Peters Group, Yale Law School, Yale’s School of Organization and Management, World at Work, SHRM, American Management Association, NASSCOM, and The Conference Board. He has spoken to audiences world-wide including Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, San Juan, Mexico City, Paris, London, Barcelona, and Brussels.
He is certified on a number of leadership assessment tools including Hogan Assessments, FACET5, and Marshall Goldsmith Executive Coaching Methodology.

Bob holds a B.S. degree with distinction from Binghamton University and a Ph.D. degree from Yale University where he specialized in the study of organizational behavior.
